Up for sale is a fantastic CLAed (Cleaned/Lubed/Adjusted) example of the classic Auto Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/1.4 fast prime lens in m42 mount. This lens is one of the famed family of “Tomioka Planars,” with optics produced by the famed Tomioka Optical works following the famed Zeiss Double Gauss Planar design. These lenses are true cult classics, highly in demand among both film and digital shotoers for their exceptional rendering and image quality, combined with great depth of field control and rugged all-metal design. This particular example features all-black styling. Lens in vintage condition with light- moderate handling wear, Plastic A/M switch cover missing. Minor cleaning marks, front coating, “speckle” marks rear coating. Glass otherwise free of scratches/haze/fungus. This lens has been fully disassembled and CLAed (Cleaned/Lubed/Adjusted), with all components cleaned and full helical lube replacement with modern grease for ultimate optical and handling performance. This is particularly important in these models, as the original grease tends to separate over time, leading to ubiquitous rougher focus action, slow/bound aperture iris, and internal haze on most unserviced examples of this lens. Q: Why buy a CLAed lens? Put quite simply, lenses get dirty over time. This entails cleaning out any internal and external soiling, cleaning aperture blades of grease that can slowing, re-lubing the focus helical, and adjusting all components for tightness and accuracy. Where there is extensive dust or internal lens soiling, I will disassemble lens cells and clean off surfaces; however, it is my general philosophy to keep lens elements in their factory positions in assembled cells when at all possible to ensure optimum performance.
